Hi guys! i'm terribly terribly sorry for the long disappearance. there were a lot going on and i had to take some time to figure things out a bit. i've received quite a number of convos and emails about my disappearance so i thought i'd better sort things out. this blog post is long overdue! (the "long" here is so underrated. LOL)

First of all, my sincerest apologies to all my ardent fans and lovely people who contacted me and i've not gotten back to. i will, promise! no words can possibly describe how thankful i am for the existence of you guys! seriously, you wonderful peeps motivated me to come back despite all the commitments. i'm dying to sew again, which i haven't for ever so long. i'm dreaming of the machine needles going up and down fresh fabrics. i know its time to start again, even if its small & slow.

Ok, i should recount already! my 2nd degree with RMIT (bachelor biz, accountancy) ended in december and i made a 2 month trip to see DH in Sydney before i had to start on work. then a little trip during the chinese new year to north east china with my parents since i haven't travelled with them in forever! it was so cold (neg 30C) but so beautiful. i had Jay Chou's music with me so it was pure magic. LOL. then its work, thanks so my lovely headhunter who was just waiting for me to jump back on the rat race. it was tough initially, loads of crap to clear and tons to learn. thank heavens it was a good trip, met some wonderful people with a decent boss. so its been alright so far. yes, i'm back to an office job. it somehow feels different...maybe i've learnt and grown a little, it feels like i've a better grip on things without having to spend ridiculous hours in the office like in my past jobs, before completely resenting the whole thing and quitting in the end. i hope this one will last me a while. i've also surprised DH with a short trip to Sydney during our 14th anniversary. Boss asked me to go. LOL DH has also made a trip here (snoring on the couch as i type. shhh) to singapore for my convocation on tuesday. he's gonna stick around til early october so i've got some company for a while. both our birthdays fall in sept, so we'll get to celebrate that since we haven't done so in years! :O its a little nuts, but i've also decided to continue with the last 5 papers of acca (chartered accountants qualification) so i may someday be an accountant. just for the sake of it. DH also urged me to make a plaque (was typing plague! :O) out of my degree so i can hang it in some office someday. i thought i'd hang it on the wall of a pretty country-like room surrounded with amazing fabrics, trinkets and trims, and of course sewing machines! LOL

so yeah....story of my life. short version. please don't feel ignored. i can't do custom orders for now due to my schedule (work, gym, classes, dh...) but i will try my best to come up with cute purses sporadically!

We've received some emails regarding the issue of us using grosgrain ribbons for the D-ring tab and sometimes the ribbon frays despite the reinforcements. So we've listened and we're switching the ribbons for 4 layered cottons or canvas for the D-ring tabs, so they'll last a long long time! It'll be perfect for using it with a swing strap and attaching your keys. The best news? Our be-ribboned MiniZs are on sale for $5! They're all made with care and reinforced of course! This is the second of our Le Marais flap purse. I couldn't find much prints that look absolutely fantastic to me, except the classic dots and this really cute teddy carnival! This version is slightly bigger, 14" by 7.5", perfect for the yummy mommy that needs a few more things in her daily essentials. We absolutely love for picturesque the front flap is! The tiny teddies are all having a fabulous time at the carnival, its so much fun just to watch them!

We figured that pockets are absolutely essential, hence a classy curvaceous one behind and a patch one inside, with a cute brown hedgehog on it too! Paired with heavy interfacing & canvas inside, its one hard working purse, not just cute! ;+)

Le Marais Flap purse

Can't believe I made this about a month back! It started as one of those bouts of uncontrollable lusts for the Chanel 2.55 which I have a crush on for like forever now. I think it started back when I was in high school and my grown up cousins had big time jobs and could afford the black flap purses with gold chains and trims for those dinners they went to. I thought I'd do the same when I grew up. But somehow the prices when north and my sensibility caused some serious balking. I adore the couture styles and its amazing how a little bit of thought and creativity, out pops my own little version of the 2.55! Not as luxurious and expensive, its still one amazing creation I hold in my hand. 4 years later and I still surprise myself! We name it after Le Marais, a district in Paris.

I decided to give the old pre-quilted fabric a little try out. It works beautiful, albeit tricky at first but it really does look pretty good in the end. And you guys know how picky I am. :P I paired this purse with thicker interfacing inside on the black cotton. A little concave on the flap & a nifty silver turnlock later, I hold in my hand, my own flap purse. Convertible actually, from a clutch, to a city-chic shoulder bag, to a messenger to keep those hands free for shopping or for your kiddo. How cool is that? Fits your daily essentials, just enough to look fabulous.

Rising Sun - The City Hobo

We had this amazing print for a while now. I love that it combines traditional Japanese prints in a modish way. I never got an inspiration for a purse coz it was so beautiful by itself, any design didn't seem good enough. Moreover, the fabric was a little delicate. Just yesterday, I flipped through my fabric box and found this again. I had wanted to do a hobo and suddenly everything clicked, and Rising Sun was born in an afternoon!

Since the print is a little thinner than our usual cottons, with a little bit of interfacing and a marine grade canvas top and inside, its now ready to be a hard-working tote!

Traditional Japan in a chic, modish, city twist. Do you like? ;+)

A/W 2010 Fall into Linen

In a blink of an eye, its september 4th! Our Fall into Linen Collection is trickling into the store. A little write-up about this little collection...

My love for the natural linen look started as soon as I set eyes on copies of Japanese zakka-esque craft magazines around 2005. Being a virgoan, I am somewhat automatically drawn to earthy tones and well, chocolate being my default fav has stood aside since while I drool all over the bright pictures in the mags featuring purses & interior crafts made out of a combination of that amazing natural, oat colored linen. Of course it naturally lead to a maniacal search for the perfect natural canvas material for my totes right after I started florspace. I needed something thicker than the common, quite flimsy summer linens mostly for summer suits & dresses. After a long while, I got what I wanted. A beautiful, natural-looking, grainy yet smooth & squeezable raw canvas that I couldn't get enough of! Unfortunately the supplier stopped producing this particular fabric & I berated myself for not investing in bales of it while I can. I blame myself for being out of town when it disappeared from right under me. Since then, I have found a replacement, not quite the same, but quite perfect in itself. That is of course, the same material that goes into all the totes that we make today. We have used this natural canvas for a while now and coupled with our stabilizer, its performance is pretty decent. Just as many of our happy customers!

Hence, this little collection of a dozen totes, with selected prints that celebrate the amazing & versatile raw, natural linen, we call it Fall into Linen. We are certainly in love, are you falling for them yet? ;+)

Linen Apples is looking all proud, with a little insignia at the bottom that somewhat resembles a store front, don't you think? ;+) We are also in the midst of switching our ribbon D-ring tabs to all fabric versions to make them much stronger & more swingable!

This beautiful Sunday Print from Shinzi Katoh will be our last as the fabric is out & retired. The beautiful canvas fabric is both adorable & super duper hardy! This tote set is perfect if your belongings tend to be a little heavier than usual (like mine! :P).

Mooncake

Saw this amazing amazing box of Mooncakes in The Straits Times newspaper on Sunday and decided to actually run out and get them! Didn't keep my hopes up as its not the lunar 8th month yet. I made my way to the restaurant briskly and lo & behold, they had them! I was ecstatic! Yeap, I'm definitely, officially a bagaholic, so badly that I'm after anything that looks like a purse! I'm never much for mooncakes but this one really struck a chord with me! Doesn't it look so much like the Vuitton Epi Speedy purse in red?

Even though its cardboard, its got quite a weight on it and its covered with this textured faux leather that actually looks and feels amazing! Handles & trimmings are in red faux leather as well. The quality is quite unexpected for such a frivolous purpose. And, the handmade white lotus paste mooncakes inside are really good too! The yolk is fresh & the paste is not too sweet for my taste. Pretty good stuff!

This amazing box bag will be good for use long after the mooncakes have been devoured! :+)

the 3 months

Its a terrible cliche, but its true that time has become quite precious to me these days. It seems to be slipping away faster than running water and the more I try to hold onto to it, the more it escapes my clutches. I fear I'm not getting enough done yet I wanna run away from everything. Its definitely a strange tug-of-war.

My sincere apologies for the lack of updates in these 3 months. Apart from trying to spend time with my other half in Sydney who was trying to complete his Phd thesis (its completed btw), & coming back to the heat & school responsibilities & restocking the shop, I've hardly had time to breathe much. Its hard to believe but more than half the year has gone by. I'm still amazed and so humbled that everyone's still so supportive of florspace and the stuff we make!

It's May

I trust some of you guys may have heard, I've made my yearly pilgrimage to Sydney, just flew here on Monday on the SQ 380. It was a pretty pleasant flight (to me!), in fact it might be one of the best ones I've ever had and I fly almost every year since 8. I'm not proud of my carbon footprints, but I make it up by walking a lot. ;+) So I had the last 3 seats all to myself right against the wall as the plane was bit empty (yaaaay!), which means the time I would've spent elbowing someone while fidgeting or trying to climb over to make it to the loo will be missed (NOT!). Suffice to say, I got my movies, american TV, food, Tiramisu ice-cream all in the comfort & peace of my 3-seater. I even got about 3 hours of lie-down sleep minus the movies & food. Determined to enjoy this situation, I even made the 2 steps to the loo 3 times during the 7 hours which usually I cringe to climb over people or get annoyed when people try that. I avoid the loo usually, even for 7 hours. LOL I was pretty well-hydrated this time! ps, fly weekdays, its $200 cheaper. :+)

Anyhoo, some of you guys prolly already know that I have to be here in Sydney for a little while to see my other half who is finishing his phd and is unable to make it back to Singapore. My next sem starts in July so I'm gonna head back only then. I'm hoping to wind down a bit, after all that crazy work & school stuff. And, to plan for our autumn/winter collection for 2010.

On that note, I've gotten some news (read: official email from SK peeps) that Shinzi Katoh fabrics are not allowed to be made into stuff and advertised sold online, i.e. not for commercial use. Funny thing is it was not indicated on the fabric selvage (like some Sanrio fabrics), neither was it on the website, not to mention SK fabrics are sold in various sites online. But arguments aside, we can't go on using SK fabric for our off-the-shelf items, but if you like a custom item, let us know and we can work something out privately.

So there it is, our little May update. I'd plain forgotten to pack my new sony pink cam in so I'm gonna have to survive with DH's old sony. Hope the pictures will still be good. :+) Hope you guys are having a good start to the month.

The Shinzi katoh Collection

Presenting the Shinzi Katoh Collection! :D We're a little obsessed with this Japanese illustrator, designer & zakka stuff creator! We've collected these prints over these couple of years and finally get to do a little collection! I presented myself with this challenge, 4 mama totes + 2 Kid totes in 4 days. Day and night I worked on it! It was tough, but really really enjoyable to work on! (much more than the impending exams I have to mug for. LOL)

Anyways, look out for them in store this weekend! We hope you guys love them as much as I enjoyed creating them! ;+)

Remember her? Isn't she such a CUTIE PIE?! This is Evelyn, Mama Wei's lovely daughter who sends me pictures of this sweetie which effectively brings a wide grin to my face immediately! I was facing serious stress issues with the impending exams and out pops Evelyn in my inbox! I had the small tote made & kept, not sure what to do with it so when Mama bought the large market tote, I thought, "Bingo!" & sent it along to her. Evelyn decided to put her favorite Pooh Bear in it! I hope she has loads of fun with it! Its never made me happier to see that cute smile!

Chocolate Research Facility No. 2

A week ago, a twitter friend sent me this tweet. Obviously I my eye almost popped that I had a new gourmet chocolate shop in my backyard (almost) and I didn't know about it! I had the duty to make the pilgrimage & report back as told. You've got to check out the dripping chocolate website & you'll know what I mean when I say I have to go, no questions asked. But I was bogged down with the darn 30-pg essay last week and I was finally free yesterday. I got to go down to the Millennia Walk branch today and boy was it like a trip to the candy store! :D I love that the shop is called Chocolate Research Facility and they have, literally a HUNDRED flavors of chocolates split into 10 different categories, from tea, coffee, fruits, local flavors (Durian, anyone?) to exotic flavors!

I'm always amused when lovely florspace customers tell me its so tough to pick any purse from my store. I felt exactly the same in the CRF store! I love that the chocolate bar mould is segmented into small, medium, large & um, xxl (?) pieces! Feelin' guilty? knock off a small piece. ;+) But from how it tastes, I'll need the whole block. :P

The back of every chocolate box. The designs are sort of thematic, but my fav is the cheese flavored one - cow fur print. LOL I have not tried that yet. I'm not about to gorge on the bars that quick.

I hummed & buzzed around the store like a weird bee not knowing which one to pick! I had mom along coz I was taking my parents to lunch. Mom didn't understand what the fuss was about the little white boxes. They looked like medicine to her. teehee There were seats to have a drink, chat & hang around the beautiful store but I had a lack of time and I wasn't allowed pictures instore. If you check out the "our space" link on the main page, you'll get to browse thru the store & chocolate pictures. I say go now. The chairs are amazing repro of Eames stiletto leg chair (Benedict, I know you'll love) & the tables are like squares of chocolate! Talk about an experience! The simplicity of the interior design seriously made me feel at home.

I came out with a bag of 4 blocks for a start. Hazelnut Dark from the Nut Series, Cappuccino from the Coffee Series, Cognac from the Alcohol Series (I'm going for Martini next!) & Cheese from the Exotic Series. I'm keeping the coffee & alcohol blocks from DH. Since I think they'll be devoured soon, I'll have to go back coz I also got a $2 off my next visit & a loyalty card for 1 free block after 10 blocks from a really nice shopgirl to a frenzied choco nut! Thanks dear!

The chocolate ranges from S$8 to S$12. A little pricey for the size, but would be worth the taste & experience! They have really cute chocolate theme goods too!

How time flies and this is no april fool's joke. I have a long term paper due this saturday and exams are at the end of the month before I fly off to Sydney in search of bit of rest & my other half. Its funny how it feels like the term has only just begun and voila, it ends, together with my initial promises to work on my projects and studies early. Obviously, I have poor time management! I always get distracted when I see fabric, or a new purse or a new piece of clothing. These things automatically set my mind in motion, doing air-de-engineering of the pieces I see. Its a pity the mental activities do not manifest itself into physical reality as much as I want to. Recently while my trusty assistant has been working on Mini purses restocks, I've been working on some easy clothing pieces so that I can save much but still have new clothes to hang around in. Several people have reminded me that its a talent that I am able to sew, however simple even though I always take that for granted (like knitting, crochet, cooking...etc.), leading to think its mostly lack of time (read: laziness!) to venture into more complicated projects for now. Damn my slow hands & super fast clock on the wall. Damn!

For the lovely people who wished you know how to sew, its really not that tough! Keep visiting amazing sites for inspirations, tutorials, how-tos. Get a sewing machine if you don't already have one & learn how to use it. No time? Start small. Simple projects like a tissue case or a child's skirt or pillowcase dress. Go slow when in doubt, don't be discouraged when your project doesn't turn out right. Take time to figure the mechanics out. Try again & again! When you finally get it, the feeling will be out of this world! ;+)

I'm procrastinating working on the audit report hence the blogpost. DH emailed this poster yesterday that he made in light of the recent pope issues. The text below says, "There's nothing more reliable than 3-inches of bulletproof glass". He thinks that the pope looks devilishly like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. I'm not sure what to say to that, except maybe thats the reason he needs 3 inches of bullet proof glass.

DH has a very warped sense of humor. But in times of stress, he cheers me up. I hate stress, it makes me stomach wonky and is causing my nightmares. I'll much prefer to create things. My head is an imaginary drawing board, already bursting with colorful ideas. Sigh.

We'd hardly have solid colored MiniZs at our shoppe coz we thought you guys might find it boring. But its so hard not to cut up these super cute felt for a MiniZ! Might have something to do with the thickness of felt that makes the purse slightly pouffy. I think they turn out pretty cute!

The great thing is that they'll be perfect for your gadgets since the felt protects them.

I'd borrow dad's Cybershot for these pictures, obviously I'm using mine. ;+) I've been using Cybershot compacts for about 2 decades now and they work amazing. Even withstands my occasional clumsiness! The compact cameras would fit in these miniZs nice & snug! Just unzip and pop them out for a quick snap! No more boring black cases!

Spring

They say its spring! I know quite a lot of you guys are snowed in and looking earnestly at the sky, hoping the sun would shine soon (you twitter peeps!). I admit I don't really know how that really feels like as I spend more than 2 decades in a mid-summer all year round type country. It ranges from ridiculously humid & splashing wet to monstrously sauna-like warmth. I used to yearn for cold weather and curse myself for having been born here in Singapore. The thing about summer is that clothes get boring and well, you don't get to 'cover-up'. When I went over to Sydney, it was bliss for half a decade. I shelled out for hand knit baby merino jumpers (sweaters), trench coats, pea jackets & all kinds of booties. I loved the layering effect a lot. Obviously, I got a little loose-y with the snacks. Now that I've been back here for a while, I've sort of gotten used to the obnoxious heat since its much easier to workout outdoors without having to spend too much time warming-up & gasping for air in the cold. Clothes do get boring (tees, shorts, havaianas), but its easier albeit unforgiving to watch the changes, so no more piling on snacks. :P

I hope it gets better for you guys who are battling/hating the cold. Stay close to the fireplace/heater! And yes, spring is here! Still hoping that someday I'll get to sit beneath a sakura tree and watch the flowers fall around me. I gotta settle for sakura prints for now. If you love them too, do check out the cherry blossoms MiniZs in store! The prints are amazing, better yet, printed on dobby weave cotton which gives a beautiful texture & feel.

Managing time...

So I've finished one accounting theory case study paper. The whole thing left me feeling more loathing of the finance and economics driven world more than ever. Its all about who owns the most cash gets the most say. Where's the love dude?

I shall not bore you guys with the gory details. I went straight out with my girlfriends for dinner after I sent in the paper, in the pouring rain no less. It was dramatic! I was glad to rid of some of the semester's work. there will be one more Audit report due in 2 weeks and then exams at the end of April. But all that aside, I'm seriously dying to crawl back to my drawing table & sewing machine to make stuff! Its weird but creating stuff, despite the sweat & ouchies, is really the only thing that takes me away from it all. My current fav is the Snaps wristlet purse. They are so so so cute to behold! Of course, and having great times with friends. But, I simply must learn to manage time between studies & making stuff. :P

What do you do to wash yourself off from cruelty of the world? ;+)

The St Paddy's Day Top

I looked in my closet and there was nothing green! 'Cept for an old grass green tank & a flutter cami, I was out of cute green! Nothing else to do but to whip one up. I didn't want to get pinched on St. Paddy's Day. LOL Besides, I want to fit in when I meet a Leprechaun. ;+)

The design is relatively similar to the Babydoll dress I made earlier.

The top portion is from an old navy tee, cut about 6" across from the bottom. It depends on how "thick" you want the top panel to be. I find 6" works for me.

I used cotton gingham for the bottom panel. You'll need your hip measurements, add 5" for the gathering effect & 1" for seam allowance. In my case, I cut out one long rectangle and stitch up only one side, which sits on the center back. You can choose to cute 2 rectangles & stitch up both sides. Fold up 1/2" twice of the bottom raw seam & sew across. You can choose to add ruffles if you like. I think I might do that later. ;+)

My pockets are about 7" square. If you have leftover from your tee, cut 2" strips & add them to the top of the pocket for interest. I added some cotton lace as well. To place the pockets, place your rectangle tube flat out. Measure 1.5" from side and bottom & pin your left pocket on for sewing. Do the same for the right one.

The tough part is to fix the top & bottom panel plus the elastic all together. You'll need a piece of elastic that will sit comfy around your under bust & stitch the ends together first. I find that the elastic stretches out a little after sewing so I usually make sure its a bit snug on the under-bust, not tight though. Put the top panel into the bottom panel, good sides together. Find the center of each section, pin the top & panel bottom together.

When you've pinned at least 8 sides, use the same method, add the elastic on. This stage can be trying & annoying, but keep going knowing your top will be cute! Have a drink or take a BREAK if you need!

When you're all done pinning, go to your sewing machine, pick the longest stitch, start at the side seam. Stretch both front & back while sewing. Go slow. I went 2 rounds to make sure everything is nice and tight. Flip it around, you're almost done!

If you like to have shoulder straps, cut 13" by 8" for 2 strips, fold lengthwise, good sides together, sew up the sides, flip it inside out and iron flat. Measure your favorite top's shoulder straps if you don't know how long it should be. You can choose to add ruffles to the sides or add lace, ribbons, etc. Its good to wear your top at this time and find out where you want your strap to sit. mine was 3.5" from the side. For the back placement, you want to place it a little angled and inner than the front placement. This will ensure the strap sits nicely on your shoulders.

You're almost done here! I added small white buttons for fun but you can do anything else! ;+) I'm already thinking of doing yellow summer tops & of course, pink ones! :D

I got so excited about this little collection I had to shoot a couple more vanity shots just because! LOL A little story/inspiration to tell about these new totes.....

Well, as you may have already known, I journeyed to Bangkok, Thailand & back. It was such a wonderful flurry of sights, food and shopping, the only desire I had was to make the trip last. Even under the scorching sun during the weekend markets, I had close to no complaints I swear. Usually I'd curse & rant til the sun sets or til I'm back in the protective shield of some place with AC. Obviously the last thing on my mind was appearance. I know, I know, appearance is everything, its the first thing someone sees you as! But hell, sometimes we're so frustrated with the bazillion things we have to do! Hence the stripped-bare simplicity of this collection.

I wanted something that would hold a lot of our necessities, including a lot of supposedly uncalled for items we may or may not want the world to know! These totes will do their job functionally. Spent last Sunday shopping for supplies & packing up gifties for lovely florspace customers. I'm not sure why but the gifting process is quite therapeutic for me. I think its because of the simple act of giving. Also, I imagine the happy faces of the recipient when they open up our packages. Recently, the lovely emails we'd receive is really humbling! They really make our days so much brighter, and makes us wanna do more too! Thank you so much for taking time to write us!

We're also continuing the yummy fruit candy from Japan coz you guys seem to love them! Yeap, we don't ever stinge on quality coz its the only thing that matters to us in this awful profit-driven world, which we're pretty tired of! So everyone gets a good shopping experience!

On new design - The Snaps Purse

I had these internal flex frame snaps for a little while now. Its tucked away with the other hardware. Like someday, I'm gonna have enough time to actually use up all of them. Its always so hard to resist these amazing bag-ware that promises a fressh new perspective to purses which I am forever looking for. Obviously, these snaps were one of the good ones, thicker metal, wider frame. I'd always do a ton of research before settling in for something, to make sure its the good stuff! It took me a while to figure out a size that would be visually pleasing yet super functional, as per our philosophy for almost 4 years now. Where has the time gone?!

I decided that it has to be puffy to be cute & accomodating. The 2" wide bottom in this design really adds to the holding power of this thing. Currently, the one above holds my keys, lippy, mints, usb, hair clips with space to spare. I tried putting a pair of clean rolled up socks and it gladly fit in! I think that it really cute-ify my purse coz there's this puffy thing inside everytime I open my tote. I have had to fend off grabby hands on 2 occasions when I brought it to class. You know who you are! LOL

Okay, so I thought it would be unfair if I'd talk to the heavens about the new puffy-snap-purse thingy without offering one in the shoppe. Strawberry snaps turned out SO darn cute, its tough to let her go actually! The polkadots felt make her look like a furry strawberry you just wanna eat up! Ok, I won't but let's see who's gonna pick her up & have a new candy hanging from her wrist! I'm planning for a lemon & blueberry Snaps, right after the Cruise totes. Keep your eyes peeled then!

Beware the Ides(eyes) of March

Obviously I was gonna whine. About the unforgiving nature of cellulite, white hair and the damn rush of time. Not that we really can do anything about the last one. My trip to Bangkok has been wonderful, loads of family time, culture, nice people, food and shopping. So good was the little trip that the withdrawal hasn't quite worn off. When I got back, the joy of exploration was suddenly removed. My emotional state plummeted, so low that I've quite lost the ability to motivate myself into doing things that I love. It became a "have to do" and I've always hated that. I think I've got the ups and downs of a bad behaving artist. Hence the excuse for not writing. ;+)

It has since gotten a little better as the memories of the trip wears off though I know school work is gonna tie my hands up again as the papers are due, very soon indeed and while we busy ourselves with the restocks of over 20 very popular & long-awaited MiniZs, we're also putting up our Cruise 2010 collection. I pray school isn't gonna kick my ass too hard this time. I've got one more semester to go after this one and I'm done. DH is still busy with finishing his phd paper and I miss him & Sydney terribly. Its funny but the only solace is to experiment with new recipes at home with mom. Today we created veggie mini Okonomiyaki. It was pretty good! I'll put up the recipe soon. Promise.

And I'm back to whining about how can I beg for more time to do everything and still actually have a life, visit museums, go to my fa cafe without looking at the time & browsing at bookstores. Hell, I actually miss my bed! How do you guys chill in this day & age?

Well, this is it. A trip spoken of for a couple of years now in my little family and we're finally taking it. I've been there quite a while ago and all I can remember was the heat, crowd and temples, especially this beautiful one up there! Not very far from the description of where I am right now (Singapore), but a break is a break. In some ways, I do wish I'm taking off alone, without DH, without family, a real break from everyone to Europe or something. But before that happens, its Bangkok.

We'd booked this thing before I set off for Sydney last November to escape the inevitable questions from my extended family about my marital status during the impending Lunar New Year home visits this year as DH is in Sydney and won't be making his way back. To make that explanation over and over to people will literally kill me so I decided to simply escape. Apparently my family loves vacations anyways. Kinda a way to escape to an alternate reality, at least for a while! Not liking the potential of getting charred skin and athlete-grade sweat-fest in the crowded city but I'll try my best to ignore that while I look forward to exotic food, architecture, bit of shopping & hopefully a lot of photo ops!

Homemade Pizza!

Mom really wanted a free evening. But the thing about making dinner for her is that she's a rather picky eater and has a strangely weak tummy. I, on the other hand, is less picky about food though I admit some things make me queasy. Anyhoo, we settled on pizza. We didn't like the traditional dough-y types so I went ahead and chose puff pastry for the base. I think it gives a lovely buttery scent that the dough types lack and the light crusty flavor is amazing! The best thing about a homemade pizza is that you can throw anything you want on it. Hey, its your pizza!

Basic Ingredients
--------------------
Puff pastry base - I used store-bought ones. It was 3 in a pack and we ended up eating 2 of them! If you like, go ahead and make 'em fresh. ;+)
Pasta sauce - There are some debates about using pure tomato paste but I find that too harsh & plain for our palate. I used a small bottle of my fav pasta sauce, mushroom & herb flavored. Note that pasta sauce can be watery so nuke it or boil it down if you find a need to.

Fun part - Stuff to go on top! I used...
Fresh mushrooms - white ones coz the swiss brown tend to give a distinct flavor that will take away much of the other flavors so I stuck to white.
Pineapple pieces - I chopped up canned rings. Go for fresh if you like!
Crab sticks - chopped
Cherry tomatoes - I prefer the small ones coz they're sweeter and bite-sized
Mozzarella cheese - I used a ready pack
Pepper - fresh ground!
(Feel free to add or subtract anything - chopped herbs, onions, capsicum, olives, pepperoni, salami.....)

Directions
--------------------
1) Lay greaseproof baking paper on a oven tin. If you noticed, I used foil, which is a bad mistake, since the pastry got stuck to it. We can fun scraping the bits off though. ;+)
2) Preheat oven to about 220degC, 428F
3) Chop uo your ingredients if you haven't already
4) Lay out a sheet of pastry on the baking paper. If you wish to have smaller serving sized pizzas, go ahead and cut up the pastry now. Its advisable to cut up the pastry only when its slightly thawed as it breaks easily when frozen.
5) Spread a decent layer of pasta sauce on the pastry. Go as close or far to the edge as you like. I left about 1/2 inch so the sides come up crispy.
6) Layer the mushrooms on the sauce, followed by the other chopped ingredients. Hold the cheese. Pepper or chopped herbs can come in here. Layer a little more sauce on the chopped ingredients.
7) Into the oven for about 10 minutes.
8) Take out the tray from oven and layer cheese on top. Go ahead and add more if you like.
9) Back into oven for another 10 minutes or so, or until pastry puffs up and browns at the side. Cheese has to be fully melted and slightly brown.

Enjoy your yummy homemade pizza! :D

Suddenly I realised I'm tired. Its been sorta building up these days. Between the last year of school beginning to kick my ass, making stuff, listing Decole goodies, & some gnawing life issues, I'm beat. Seriously.

A fellow crafter asked on twitter if I'd slept among creating all the stuff for the shoppe.

I was amused but in reality, I do sleep. Just that maybe the recent cloudy dreams of my childhood memories makes it even harder for me to be fully rested and energetic for the day. I kept floating through the day and living through dream-state at night. I might be yearning for simpler days. I'm not sure. Boy am I confused!

And I miss Sydney. The pace is definitely slower. Yes it gets crowded and noisy but there's always a quiet space to escape to. My apartment, the park, museum, by the harbor, somewhere! But here in Singapore, like Hong Kong / Shanghai / Tokyo etc (if some of you guys have been to those places!), there isn't really a quiet space per se. I'm not kidding, since as I speak, my neighbors upstairs are screeching their furnitures. I prolly ought to mention they sometimes do that at 3am. Periodically, they drill / hammer their walls at 11pm. I'm not sure whats up. I completely understand the agony of getting used to crowded asian cities as some of my friends have mentioned. Today an american dude yelled at a bunch of local kids who were blocking the entrance of a supermarket/mall. He spent most of his time knitting his brows in the supermarket after. I don't think he enjoyed the shopping trip. I didn't either, coz I came home distressed and head-heavy. The 100deg weather prolly doesn't help either.

Gonna need a lot of decent rest to hit the ground running again. (>__<)

Kitchen-sink totes!

Its days like these I wish I had a bigger tote. Last week, I was stuck in school, lugging bunch of books, my laptop and a small purse I'd insist on using for the day. It was one of my earlier creations. And I thought it was super cool & chic to just be with my maxi clutch and my macbook. But nooooo.....I ended up with 2 textbooks and A4 sized notes which had no where to go but crumpled and dog-eared by the end of the day. I do need a tote. Something to hold everything, still look great and not make me look like some clumsy chick juggling stuff on my hands rushing for classes. Ugh.

Hence the creations of bigger totes that combines cuteness, style, utility and durability. The japanese denim I'd painstakingly collected a while ago came to mind for the bottom so that we can throw it around and it'll still look great. Besides, denim looks better with use and age. ;+) I'm quite particular about denim, the color, feel and grains. I don't own 30 pairs of jeans like my some of my friends do. But I digress! This denim fabric is ever slightly stretchy, with beautiful diagonal grains integrating lighter and darker threads. It feels tough yet comfy. I'd imagine it'll be perfect for a skirt, but thats for later!

The top panel is one of our all time favorites that has gone out of production. We don't have a lot of it, like many of our other prints, we try very hard to make the best of very bit! The amazing combination of animals, dolls, fruits, trees over colorful meadows just takes all of our weariness away! To soften the harsh lines between Wonderland and the dark denim, we added a strip of lattice lace. For further cuteness & girlyness, red white polkadots for the inside and a peek of it is seen on the top. After much contemplation for the handles, we decided that navy blue woven handles are best, to match the bottom denim and bring everything together, but most of all for comfort and durability to withstand use!

We are planning for more to come, divided between the need for cuteness & utility, you'll see both small and large totes! For now, check out Wonderland!

Ok, our swing straps are long awaited! I'm so sorry it took us so long to process them. :P I know how much you guys have been asking for them! Thanks so much for your patience guys! Sweet Love

We present the 2nd collection of 2010! Its the season of pink, spring, the lunar new year and valentine love! Its a lovely coincidence that the lunar new year coincides with valentines and with many of my friends knotting up this year, we can't help but be surrounded by loads of overflowing love of all kinds! I bet my frozen friends in the northern hemisphere can't wait for the first flowers to bloom and for warmth to finally shine in! Hopefully this little burst of powder pink brings in loads of hope for this year!

One of our favorite prints, amazing sweets of all kinds pepper through the classic pink gingham background! Returning to my first love...

Almost 4 years ago as I was frustrated with the rat race, I started making purse out of the need to go back to something wholesome I could just do and enjoy. I was already knitting and crocheting, but it wasn't quite as satisfying. I was actually doing well in the rat race, my bosses liked me because I work hard & fast but it wasn't fulfilling at all not to mention I wasn't one to wake up darn early and brave the morning rush hour before breakfast & coffee. I was drained. Fast forward, I'm a lot happier pottering around my fabrics, dreaming & making things! But like everything else, I got bored...again. Its a strange feeling but when I got news that this particular print was available in a small production again, I was suddenly awaken again! It prolly sounds ridiculous to everyone reading but this ONE piece of fat quarter that landed in my hands 4 years ago single-handedly drove me out of the rat race and back to my dream land! I had searched endlessly for weeks, I remembered to no avail because by the time I chanced upon this print, it was long out of production. I don't know why but the retro-cuteness had become my classic! Something just clicked in me. I had only one amazing fat quarter of fabric but I shared anyway. Oh how I miss that tote! It might be time to make another! :D

So we wasted no time in acquiring another limited amount of this print, just out of love for these amazing mushrooms! Its been such a tumbling year of ups and downs so we're starting 2010 rekindling our love for the classic and the simplicity of life and of course, loads of mushrooms and joy!

Happy new year everyone! Hope you guys had a great start to 2010! Its bit late as I've just got back from Sydney and things are bit unsettled and we're busy with the new collection! Since the Lunar new year and the big V-day are all on the horizon, its gonna be such a pretty collection! We're seeing a lot of red. *wink*

We had a great time watching the fireworks on new year's eve from the north shore and tho it was crowded, noisy and rowdy, it was overall a great experience. I'm a big sucker for gigantic fireworks over my head!

All that said, we'd better get back to work! New prints are pouring in and we're working extra hard to bring you guys more amazing stuff in 2010! Plus, our previous creations are going on sale so don't miss out on a great bargain! :D

You gotta try this! Its easy, yet So Yum~!

Low-fat vanilla (i used cadbury's)
bunch of oreos smashed (i got DH to do the punching! Get your kids involved!)
bunch of frozen berries (i used sara lee's box of variety berries)
melted chocolate (i used haigh's & it was heavenly!)
strawberries halved

mix the oreos & vanilla ice-cream
line the bottom of the glass with melted chocolate
layer with frozen berries (they give a surprising burst at the end!)
add the ice-cream mix
add halved strawberries
freeze
&
enjoy! :D

summer love

its been 20 days and spending summer in sydney with my beloved DH isn't as steamy as one might think....metaphorically that is. I'm never a summer weather person. People who know me would know that I'll need 25degC or less to function like a normal decent human being. I'm precisely writing because its too hot to sleep. Sweating and sleeping isn't normal for me and DH thinks we should ride out the horrible heatwave weekend without airconditioning or electric fans. No, he isn't a green-maniac. He's just good in adverse conditions. Not me. I'm 'spoiled' in terms of the weather. I'll cut costs by working in the heat back in singapore, but come sleep time, I need AC, period. One time that my AC brokedown, I went without sleep for almost a week. It was madness. In the end, I was almost insane.

Now that DH is snoring under the 'wet blanket' I made for him, out of towel soaked in cold water, I'm free to indulge in my late-night thoughts I haven't been able to do in a long time. Through time together and apart, its difficult not to deal with the tiny annoying differences we both have. We've been together for almost 13 years now and have spent about 5 years long distance, through hours of arguments, tearing apart each other's characteristics, likes, dislikes, beliefs so many many times, and yet, life still manages to throw us curve balls when we least expect. Perhaps its the nasty heat thats making us less huggable, but isn't couple-hood suppose to survive these adverse situations? I realized I've changed... no longer looked at him the same way I used to. I hate it when that happens. Here is a guy that I've spent so much time and been through so much with, we literally grew up together, yet I'm losing connection with him. No longer it seems exciting, no longer do I feel the rush, the need to be with him. Its a freaky realization. Does this mean this is it? End of the road? No more light at the end of the tunnel? I cried bitterly at this new-found realization. What's gonna happen to us? What am I to do? I told DH, please do something to win me over, and fast. The worst thing was, he didn't change one bit, he still loved me, still did silly little things for me, even though they felt unnecessary. I felt horrible at myself. Maybe the 'freedom' I enjoyed in Singapore without DH was a bad idea. But I could only have time to make stuff and somehow excel at it because I had all those time! Did all that became my life? Has it defined my existence - one without DH? Did he become redundant in the process? There were so many questions directed and I didn't know who or what to blame even though I felt like I was the perpetrator.

A few days later, when things run better after the weird outburst I thought, maybe me, him & us didn't change at all. Maybe it was because I had to be alone in Singapore that I felt I had time and space to self-actualize, to do things I really wanted. I felt happy and the feedback that fed this happiness was all the nice things people said about florspace and the stuff we made with our hearts. It is so important that everything is smooth and everyone is happy. I didn't sleep for 2 days when a dear customer received an empty package. My heart stopped short and DH didn't quite know how to deal with my annoyance then. I felt happy only when it was resolved and she was happy. The only drawback with this life arrangement where I see DH twice a year is that, left to fend for myself, I had to sink myself in the little life I handmade for my very self. The little existence in Singapore remains wholesome with only a smidgen of it left for DH and when that tiny bit shrinks smaller and smaller, that fear of DH's redundancy is realized.

But in the end, after all those thoughts were sorted out and we found new things to discuss (eg, Twillight series, Jacques Lacan & Le Parkour), everything seems to be fine... for now. We still have our little differences, annoyances & the horrible heatwave but it seems we'll be okay. I like to think there's always someone better out there and settling is the easy way out. But when do we stop to think that maybe we should hold back ourselves, work on things and not call it quits when the road gets bumpy? Love is never easy anyways.

Still, when do we really know when its not okay? I'll never know.... I'll enjoy my summer love for now & will try be nice. :+)

Not guilty of eating too much chocolate cupcakes, but of neglecting the blog. Oh wait, that too. Yikes. Its been such a crazy time, I had mosaics of great etsy finds yet have absolutely no time to post them up. I'm really intending to do so when all this madness (exams) end and I get a little break with DH in sydney. He's got broadband now so no excuses!

After my bout of stomach flu in September, everything's like whirlwind! Loads and loads of custom orders. Well, loads to us anyways coz we take time to make stuff, to make sure every little detail is of supreme quality. I get antsy and guilty and can't get to sleep at night if the stuff isn't as good as I want them to be. So on and offline, we do buckets of purses for weddings, shops and people simply love our stuff! Heavens bless these wonderful people who keep us alive. I know, its not Thanksgiving yet, but we feel so lucky to have such wonderful support! Its not a millionaire job, but its good enough for me. Hell, I'm living in heaven! Ironical but so true. LOL

If this all sounds bit fast, its because I'm high on coffee & stressed out from studying for the tax and corporate accounting paper looming at the end of this month. (*gasp*) Worst yet, my landline at home decided to trip out on me suddenly. No internet, no landline at home right now til end of the week when the technician comes. I'm actually writing this at a coffeeshop at the next suburb over at 9.15pm on monday night. Not complaining since they got coffee, smidge of wireless internet and proper table and chair. The facebook flash games won't work tho. Maybe its a good thing, since I got quite a bit of admin done. phew! Apologies to everyone who's been waiting for feedbacks from florspace. yikes! But thats done. finally. :+)

I had to squeal when I found Wanroom in the usual bunch of gashapon machines! Immediately I set about like a maniac locating dollar coins to feed into the machine! LOL They're tiny, adorable & comes with tiny carton boxes in the plastic sphere too! Now they sit on my shelf right above my table to add to the cuteness. I believe they make me a little happier.

A little birthday special from me to you! I have just gotten the most amazingly mesmerizing french blue polkadots print all the way from Japan! Can't wait to do up a super cute ribbon tote I thought, on my way home! The only thing was which print to match it with! It couldn't be too thick since the drawstring will not work well & it had to be french!

Les Amis in blush seems to be the best. Its light & girly enough to balance out the deep french blues. Ribbon hobos have to be a little lighter than the usual totes for the drawstring ribbons to work well. Do expect a pink polkadots version coming soon! ;+)

Giving Thanks....

Its been a really busy time for me. School assignment deadlines are looming & we're busy with custom orders & loads of new & amazing fall totes. It has become quite clear now that I will have to make a trip to Sydney at the end of the year to be with my other half since he's unable to come over. I'll be gone from Nov to Dec. florspace shoppe will stay open but there's prolly not going to be new things unfortunately. Its a sacrifice I have to make to be away from my dear dear sewing machine! Anyways, its my birthday (Sept 21st) and CT, a wonderful customer & BFF has given me some wonderful gifts! They have really made me feel better! The little note above is so true & hence I'm gonna do it. People have never been able to tell my true age anyways. LOL

I'm particularly fond of the gorgeous wrapper! Perhaps its age, perhaps its fall but I'm into a lot of muted colors & elegance these days. I've recently added slate grays of stripes & dots, browns & very deep turquoise to my wardrobe. They calm me down a lot while dealing with all the crazy things happening around me. I've learnt to keep above & to have a teflon soul so that nothing really sticks. A good night's rest is really all I need to recharge for a new day.

Of course a good mug of warm tea does the trick as well! Recently, I've found a small range of Dean & Deluca at the 360 Market @ ION orchard. Its a god send since I've been a long time fan of Dean & Deluca! Sure wish to own their grocery tote someday, but for now, I've got my sights set on the French Sea Salt which costs S$38 a jar. Nonetheless, the house blend tea above is amazingly beautiful in scent & taste. The aroma is beyond words when I'm down & out. Thank heavens for good tea! & good friends!

2 new Reversible Messenger Hobos!

The last 2 hobos in our 6 hobo challenge! After doing up 2 initially, we decided to do up a total of 6! The fun part was coming up with the fabric combinations! Basically we had a headache since the hobo has to be decently light-weight, yet strong, cute, functional, pretty.....suffice to say we put quite a bit of thought into them! I personally love the Olive LuvBirds a lot since its been a dream of mine to decent pair green & pink together since childhood! I hope you guys find it cute. If you do, I can go tell my old art teacher I successfully made this color combination work! Take that, Mr. Tan! hah! Revenge aside, I love the print a lot, the sky blue elephants too and they've been hogged by me, for a while now. It usually takes a bit of time to use up the fabric since mediation is required while the prints speak to me and tell me what they'll like to be made into!

Elly Blue is a beautiful, yet undertstated creation, perfect for a busy mommy with a little boy! I made this with that image in mind! Holding hands & off to a nice picnic...

One of the reasons for my long-standing loves for Japanese fabric is its designers. Often we overlook who they really are! I admit I'm a tad slow when reading interviews in Japanese in the mags, but I do try really hard! hehe I love how Mico Ogura's designs are mostly small, yet clean, adorable & appeal to the purest of hearts. When I look into her designs, I am reminded of my childhood, the days when we played catch in the sun & went to elementary school. It does make me slow down a little and appreciate the simple things in life. There was an interview with her I believe in an earlier issue of Cotton Time magazine. I'm gonna have to rush off to school for a project so I'll have to leave the referencing til later. :+) Though, if you read Japanese, hop on over here. And some things she does.

Just wanna say that the 2nd 'red' reversible messenger hobo is up in the store! The Shinzi Katoh's Still one got snapped up last night and I'm so happy coz this one's going out of the country, all the way to Austria! Yaaaay! Anyhoo, I knew I'd wanted to pair up this very french print with a french linen. Unfortunately, this geographical location has a serious lack of french linens and ticking. It was after some search that I came across this pretty linen canvas version! All the way from France! Combined with baby gingham for the cute, girly & innocent feel, + the cotton measure tape trim, this perfect little hobo is almost made for a cute mom with a little girl! ;+)

Friday Updates: After the flu

Some of you guys may have heard, the head elf of florspace was down with a bout of stomach flu. It eventually turn out to be a full-fledged flu, fever, nose, throat & all, sans the canker sores. It was quite bad actually. I had an inkling (this is the 3rd time) I'm 'allergic' to vegetarian (asian variety) food since they tend to load up on certain types of oil which is really bad for me. I throw up when my body has to process too much oil, sugar & fat. Why am I still on the heavy side, I'll never know. But thank heavens I'm still able to run and jump. Anyhoo, this 'flu' had me sitting on the can while holding a bucket. Suffice to say, I was clearing out the gunk both ways. It was horribly painful, mind-bending & hellish. I was down for 3 days + fever etc. before I thought things took a turn for the better. I threw up & sat on the can again while my tummy decide to give me a numb pain for 2 nights. Somehow, I got much better today - tummyache gone, weakness in my limbs cease & i'm able to sew & type quite normally now. Thanks to mom's everyday porridge & loads of care!

So I wasted no time to do up the reversible messenger hobos (quite a mouthful!), which are rather complicated & time-consuming but are so fun to do up! The final product always makes me wanna do it all over again right away! I know, I know, you guys love the redness, so here's one of the ever ever popular Stroll print from Shinzi Katoh! I'm in love with both the large gingham & red polkadots & somehow in some strange manner, it just quirkily came together! Hmm...must be the little cotton lace that speaks volumes. I love these little pretty cotton laces. They bring almost anything together! 2 more 'red' hobos a-comin'! Before we got 3 more cute ones coming! + we got vegan leather handles from Japan! This means a lot more of your favorite classic everyday totes coming along too! Hope I can get to do that much before heading off to Sydney to join my other half (who's stuck there) for Christmas & the big NYE fireworks! I'm really looking forward to that since I missed it for a handful of years now.

A fiercely intense color, ultramarine is the most vibrant of deep deep blues. I'd watched a documentary a while back on dyes in India and they did a little feature on one of the most beautiful ultramarine blue I've ever seen! It was in powder form, so intense, it just burns into my eye sockets yet completely natural, from a rock I believe, that they had to painstakingly extract. Often overlooked, this color can actually provide a burst of energy in a calming manner, which means solving problems in a smooth, calm & collected manner. ;+)

I've always loved vintagey things and it seems like the logical road to take to put together one of these amazing spool pincushions from Julie! Just simply glad I found her shop! If you sew, you'll definitely need one. I swear you'll love it. If you don't have time to put it together, she has beautiful ready made ones in her shop too! Just hop on over!

Because Julie was so generous to send over quite a number of pieces to choose from, I had so much fun putting them together to see which pieces will go where for the maximum old-school effect! A bit of tacky glue was all it takes to glue them together and to make it look a little more polished, I sanded the corners a little. A few of the leftover pieces are going into a mini DIY project! yaay!

The pincushions are stuffed packed with wool roving so they're perfect for pins coz they go right in and come right out! I've already started using it on the table and its a dream and quite fun to spin the turntable around and around. LOL That's mom's super heavy heirloom scissors that I love so much! They don't make 'em like that anymore. :/

Sepia & B&W shots are a must when it comes to something so amazing! It really makes my sewing table a little more me now. ;+) sigh. Thanks Julie!

DIY Tuesday: Polkadots Babydoll Top

Made a new top! Actually I made it last week and had already worn it twice & had gone thru the vigorous washing machine process. hehe Thought I'll save this for a slow blogging day. ;+) I really was in need of something new for my blah wardrobe as mentioned. I hardly get to shop for clothing these days, not to mention the mass-production quality leaves me nauseous. Ugh. Anyhoo, I had this super cute classic polkadots fabric hanging around for a while, actually planned for a cute bubble-hem dress but thought I'll try a top first, besides, I needed it right away! Instant gratification can be pretty satisfying sometimes! And how easy was this top & pretty cute on too! If you got a tee, some fabric, a sewing machine & some 1/8" elastic, you're good to go. Instructions below!

1) First, take a well-fitted tee, draw a straight chalk line across the bottom very near to the seam, cut off the bottom band, and measure about 7inches up, draw another line across. Make sure this band fits your bust line and its not too loose.

2) Cut the band out and fold over & iron about 1/2 inch on the top to form the top hem ready for the elastic.

3)Take your 1/8" elastic, go around yourself above your bust, make sure it fits snug, add an inch & cut. Sew the elastic together with an zigzag stitch.

4) Sew the elastic around the top hem you made on the t-shirt band earlier. To do that, watch this episode of Threadbanger. You'll need to pin the joined elastic portion to the back of the top hem, the other side to the other half. Stretch and sew along the elastic with a zigzag stitch.

5) Take out your fabric for the bottom portion. Depending on how wide/comfy you wish the bottom to flare out, you'll need to adjust. A good way to measure is your hip measurement, adding 10-20 inches in order to have that babydoll effect. My polkadot fabric is pure cotton which doesn't stretch so I added a couple more inches for luck. If you're using another tee, and prefer your bottom not to flare out too much, add about 5 inches to your hip measurement. The length depends on your favourite top/preference. Don't worry if its too short/long. If its too short, you can always add lace! If its too long, simply cut, leaving enough room for a bottom hem. I left 3 inches for the bottom hem since it adds a bit of weight and boxy style. :+)

6) Fold your fabric in half and sew down one side, iron open the seam. If you're super neat, you can fold both seams and sew down both sides to secure it. I simply cut both sides with pinking shears and they've been good.

7) Put the top Tee band into the bottom piece, right sides together, back seam to back seam. If you're skillful, add in the elastic (measured to your underbust comfort level) and sew them all up together. If not start with the top & bottom then add in the elastic, like the top hem of the top. If you notice, I did the bottom elastic looser than the top since I look better without the scrunched up fabric at my underbust, revealing a huge potbelly when I sit down! Its a bit more forgiving when the underbust elastic has a bit more give. ;+) Stretch and sew with a zigzag stitch and you're almost done.

8) Fold in and hem the bottom. I just went over it with a straight stitch.

9) If you like to wear it as a tube top, you can stop here! There's so many options here! I simply took out the leftover tee, measured about 6 inches and made 2 bands, pinned it on to the top elastic, stretched and sewed across with a zigzag stitch. The stretching gives it the slight ruched cuteness & it holds better when on the elastic. Of course, you'll need to wear the top and measure if the straps would fit you before sewing. If you prefer a halter, simply cut 2 long strips and sew to 2 front ends. Alternatively, use ribbon, rope, whatever you like it to be! ;+)

And you're done! Apologies for the word-only tute. Didn't expect to be writing a tute but thought you guys might wanna know the how-to. I promise when I do up my next maxi dress in the same style (soon!), I'll post the step-by-step tute with pics. Its in quite a similar style as the amazing Tee dress on Threadbanger so do hop on over if you need to!

Super easy Banana Nutella Muffins!

Banana Nutella Muffins! Boy the name's a mouthful but it was so unexpectedly yummy, it was gone in no time! Those slightly overripe bananas were literally calling out to me on saturday night. And I had to try out Sandra's recommendation of using nutella in muffins! Besides, I had bought those really cute ruffle muffin cups from Daiso earlier. ;+) Sunday's the best day for baking! yaay! Resipe below! You HAVE to make some. For real.

Ingredients for about 30 small muffins (sorry about the metric system!)
200g flour
150g butter (Golden Churn gold foil butter makes the most fragrant goodies!)
125g sugar
half a glass of milk
3 slightly overripe banana
2 tablespoon nutella
oven, muffin cases, muffin tin

Get out your ingredients. Pre-heat the oven at 190degC. We used the creaming method - 100g flour to 75g caster sugar, 75g butter. We doubled that proportion for about 30 small muffins. Note that if you're using sweet ingredients for later, eg banana, nutella, kinda stuff, its good to skip about 1/2 to 1 tablespoon (25g) of sugar or it'll get way too sweet.

If you have a electric mixer, use it. We're going old-school - creaming the butter & sugar with a wood spoon. Its pretty tiring, but kinda worth it since I can control the process. Room temperature butter does the best job. Using the wood spoon, roughly cut up the butter into manageable pieces then mix & beat til the mixture becomes smooth, white and rather fluffy.

Kinda like so, but I recommend beating it for a little longer as it'll curdle later if it wasn't well beaten at this point. Then add one egg to every 100/75/75 proportion. Beat the egg seperately and add it in a little by little while beating at the same time. If your mixture separates into individuals (curdle!), you'll need to increase the beating for the mixtures in order for the mixture to return to the creamy state. Add a little bit of milk thereafter.

Then add in your fun ingredients! We added about 3 lightly mashed bananas, 2 tablespoon of nutella (Mmmm!) and continued to beat til everything's nice and combined. Now, fold in the flour at the rate of about 2 tablespoons at a go. Don't beat at this point, fold means lightly mix in the flour til well combined each time. If the mixture gets a little dry, add in a little bit of milk. Eventually I did use quite a bit of milk, perhaps til about half a glass for the mixture to have a soft-dropping consistency from the spoon.

Get out the muffin cases & tin, spoon in about 2/3 full, pop in the pre-heated oven (190degC) for about 25mins or til the wood skewer (or fork) prick comes out clean.

Enjoy those yummy muffins before they're gone! :D

Sneak Peek - The Hobo Messenger

Ooooh! Finally! I REALLY had wanted so long to make a huggable hobo-esque messenger type with a flappy thingamajig. It was tough to actually word it out! LOL Its usually a straight U-hobo or a structured messenger, but being the comfort/control-freak that I am, I wanted BOTH in a bag, plus size, function, cuteness, thick straps, etc. etc. LOL Yeap, pushing boundaries is FUN! yaaaay!

After researching & pondering & prototyping for ever so long and looking at ever so many inspirations from clothes, environment, vintage-goodness, I finally came up with this (above!) in one afternoon, despite the heat & stress. Its funny but sometimes, the stress really does bring out the best in me. When the inspiration coaster comes, I throw everything aside and jump in, no second thoughts! Its really the final prototype hence the sneak peek release in the shoppe, at 20% off no less! Everyone around here is sighing in content to see how adorable & functional this new guy is! Mom thinks its way better than my previous prototypes, friend wants it as her new diaper bag, assistant wants one as a school/work bag. Mission (kinda) accomplished. :D

We're gonna fine-tune the design further - flap strength, the gusset size, & to include a pocket on the inside & outside as well for more stuff. They will be a possibility of making them REVERSIBLE! 2 in one baby! That means no wimpy, hassling snaps & stuff coz its suppose to be the easiest-to-use hobo around, not to mention its deep enough not to allow your stuff to fall out. Thanks so much to you guys who have been emailing us about the new Hobo Messenger! Here's the big news...

Did you notice food always makes us feel better? Not that its always a good thing though. I think its my low metabolic rate that allows me to gain 5 pounds after a square of chocolate. Its nuts I tell ya. I work like a horse, lose a bit of weight and it ALL comes back after I cave into a trip to haagen daz (Thanks CT! LOL). But hey, we only live once and I believe we should live it to the fullest! Seriously, being overweight is one of my least concerns as long as I can find clothes to fit me, or at least make some to! Even though its one of the lowest priority, I can still run really fast to chase a bus, or away from a robber/rapist/weirdo. So, judging someone's weight rather than ability is shallow. You heard it here first. I say that coz I know young, thin, pretty girls who cannot run to save her own life. So people, take care of your health, run, swim, play tennis, eat fruits. Bu don't forget the chocolates & ice-cream too. As CT says, small amounts in moderation cannot hurt us, instead will bring us joy! ;+)

So if you're feeling crummy that the week seems to last forever, indulge in a piece of chocolate, eat a sundae or buy a cute new dress. You will feel better! :D

Pondering Tuesdays: DIY dresses

After my bout of lethargy, I figure the only thing is to get a new dress to lift the mood! Figuratively, that is, coz I prefer to make mine, preferably from thrifted or old materials. I do have a couple of dresses by yours truly since I love them so much. They're perfect to swish around in, especially in summer when ironically, with all that fabric (light ones!), the air passes thru more easily, hence the coolness. :D I'm gonna need more, I thought to myself, and since the research on DIY dresses came up, I thought I'll share the tutorial links too + some inspiration around the web! ;+)

1) Threadbanger. I watch them ever since they came into existence and I must say they never fail to feed my obsession with making stuff and keeping the enviro eco-friendly. Loads of T-shirt recons lately, Tee-Dress, the $10 Wedding dress, Shirred summer dress, and the dress from mens slacks.

2) The recent Cute summer dress from mens dress shirt from Chic Steals. Loving the ruffly top. Besides, dad just gave me an old button down.

3) Dornob is offering some really helpful inspirational pics of upcycling old clothes, including dresses!

4) Style Bubble made an amazing blue dress with vintage-y elements which I really love! The pleated sleeves are an amazing idea!

5) A really adorable Shirt Dress by made! Ok, this one's a girl's dress but I'm seriously tempted to try an adult version, perhaps with an empire waist. ;+)

Need a hug monday

I need a hug. Looks like its gonna be a long week. A deadline is approaching. Have to send in an assignment for school this weekend and we had to sit around for 4 hours this evening but its still kinda half done. I'm beat and so are my mates but I'm pushing myself so much to finish the darn thing, I'm surprising myself! Then I thought back about some people saying that I'm a superman. Am I really one? I thought about it on the long way back home. Campus is on the other side of town which can be rather trying to commute to frequently. Well I do have a case of perfectionism, or rather being anal about having to finish something I start or I won't look at it anymore. Its kinda got a time limit, or shelf life, this attention span of mine. And this weird need to make a super long to-do list which I never get to finish and will feel awful at the end of the day. This includes updating the blog too!

Reviewing my typical day...I do multitask a lot apparently. Making breakfast, dealing with online admin, snapping pictures, uploading/editing them, packing can all happen at the same time. It might have something to do with ADD too. But hey, it gets a lot of things done! Plus after breakfast, I study, do assignment, laundry & cutting up stuff to make. Oh and I put in music/movie/TV re-run at the same time. By evening I'm beat from having to deal with everything plus the horrible tropical heat, I catch a quick shut-eye for 20mins before dinner comes home. Then its postal run, and back to make stuff, shower, talk to DH over the phone & more online admin(listing, emails, convos, blog, flickr, etc), more packing, research for DIY/eco concerns/fabric/cameras/whatever else before getting shut eye for the day. Suffice to say, I hardly get to sit around for a minute, except travelling or during uni lecture.

I think the measure of lethargy is how much one misses the bed. LOL

p/s: Helped a girl with seriously bandaged ankles up the entrace steps at campus today. The poor girl was walking so slowly and painfully yet so determined to continue school! She was so thankful and I felt better being of at least some help to her. But seriously, where the hell is the disabled access ramp at SIM!? Tsk tsk.

Maxi Clutches - comin' Monday!

Got quite a few emails asking about these new babies and We're revealing them now! Sorry about being so sneaky and all, it actually wasn't that way. We were really busy with restocking and sending out orders this week, we were swamped! By the way, another huge thanks to everyone who came, saw and bought stuff from florspace! :D

Our very classic, vintage-inspired maxi clutches are about 10.5" zippered top so your stuff are completely secure! 7.5" height in order to store all your goodies, and about 14" at the widest bottom! A magnetic snap keeps everything safe and pretty! No pockets inside coz well, its not ginormous and it looks cuter having to dig for stuff. Trust me. hehe Flap is double stitched on both layers, in & out, so its all greatly secure! We supported use of softer materials with canvas back and canvas for the inside so they maintain sturdier construction. They will retail at $42 at this time and only on etsy! ;+)

I personally *heart* white a lot! Hence the selections for this Friday. :+) Its the most basic color as all the primary colors come together to make white. Its also the most beautiful in my humble opinion. I would love to wear white all the time if not for the fact that I'm such a klutz - spill accidents & black patches on my tush isn't uncommon. Tuesday Humor - No-frills airline

With all the horrible airplane mishaps recently making us nervous about airtravel, it might be time for a bit of humor to lift the mood. I say its time for airlines to shape up and for us to pick a more trusty company. LOL

A no-frills airline
You'll Know It's a No-Frills Airline If:

1. They don't sell tickets, they sell chances.

2. All the insurance machines in the terminal are sold out.

3. Before the flight, the passengers get together and elect a pilot.

4. If you kiss the wing for luck before boarding, it kisses you back.

5. You cannot board the plane unless you have the exact change.

6. Before you took off, the stewardess tells you to fasten your Velcro.

7. The Captain asks all the passengers to chip in a little for gas.

8. When they pull the steps away, the plane starts rocking.

Whew! Its been a long day! Had to stay up last night, amend all the 155 listings in the shoppe for the sale, answer convos, tweet and prepare more stuff for you wonderful people who stayed patiently by the screen and waited (past midnight for the eastern hemisphere!). To all you early birdies, THANK YOU + HUGS! Its very cliche, but seriously, we'll be living on the streets without you! Its well and truly such a wonderful feeling to be appreciated for the things we do! You early birdies will definitely find extra goodies with your order! ;+) yaaay! Not to worry "later-comers" (*giggles*), our orders always come with love and thanks, just because you believed in us! It makes everything worth its weight in gold.

Now, you might already know this, but I'm quite a juvenile and almost naive person. I have issues keep secrets and holding things in! With fabric construction constraints, I found in order to create a large clutch enough for our daily (load of!) essentials to be crammed into a hand-held, it needed both to be sturdy, yet relatively lightweight and somewhat structured yet will be suitable to be made in cottons and canvases. I hated super hardy clutches like the old hand-tooled leather ones coz they can hurt as well as clutches that eventually turn lumpy after sometime of usage. Pleats and whatnots tend to trap dirt in the yummy fabric and it can become difficult to handle in everyday situations. I'd wanted something classic, something simple, in the florspace spirit of real functionality and letting the fabric speak for itself.....hence a sort of blown up version of our small clutches we used to do. I loved the classic circular moon shaped flap and trapezoid style. The flat bottom means your clutch will mould to your essentials and habits and you can control how much to put in, not to mention things will be more easily found as they can only be on one plane! And, it packs so easily in your suitcase for travel! And of course, the zippered top means nothing falls out even if you drop the clutch or have to fend off unwanted attention. ;+)

Quite a bit of thought went in but it'll be boring you guys out! I will not be releasing the one you see at the top, as the fabric is vintage and has a bit of flaw in it. Its mine for keeps! 3 more really adorable ones like above are coming in store, so do keep your eyes peeled if you're a clutch-anatic like moi! :D
